Ali Juman, who was arrested in October over social media posts calling for buildings and vehicles to be set on fire, has been remanded in custody for another 15 days by the Criminal Court.

Juman, 25, of Kuhlhavahge, Haa Alifu Baarah, was arrested on October 22 under a court order following a social media post allegedly inciting violence and calling on the public to set fire to buildings and vehicles and loot a shop.

The court ordered an additional 15 day remand yesterday after his initial 12 day remand period expired.

According to the Criminal Court's remand order, police are investigating Juman on suspicion of terrorism.

In his post, Juman said the public could not remain idle while the government handed land to Jews. He called on people to set fire to buildings and vehicles, loot Redwave outlets owned by Eydhafushi MP and Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ahmed Saleem, and riot.

In a similar case, Zihan Hassan, a former Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) First Lieutenant who also served as a Deputy Minister under the current administration, was arrested over a social media post calling for fires to be set at the President's Office, Supreme Court and Parliament.

Zihan was also remanded in custody for 15 days.

Zihan deleted the post about an hour after publishing it. In the post, he questioned why buildings housing the three branches of state had not been set on fire.
