Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has submitted a resolution to the Parliament in holding a referendum vote for the "Maldives Waterfront and Marina" project, which will be developed at Rasmale' by United Arab Emirates (UAE) company Eagle Hills.
MDP Parliamentary Group Leader Ibrahim Nazil stated they submitted a resolution for a referendum vote regarding the Rasmale' project to Parliament two days ago and that it is a responsibility given to members of MDP's National Council.
Nazil went on to say that he hopes work on the resolution moves forward within the Parliament. However, he highlighted the changes brought to the Parliament's guidelines, stating that it will be difficult for members to debate and vote on the resolution.
MDP's National Council passed the call for a referendum vote regarding the Rasmale' project. They have also passed a vote where if the government does not give an answer by 15th November, they will take direct action.
During the press conference held outside Parliament, South Hulhumale' Constituency MP Dr. Ahmed Shamheed said the resolution states if foreign individuals are given permission to live in any part of Maldives, public opinion on the matter should be recognized.
Shamheed said gathering public opinion on the matter is required by the Parliament.
The resolution calls to hold a referendum to determine whether the project should be handed over to Eagle Hills. It also calls to suspend the transfer of rights over Rasmale’ land to Eagle Hills or any third party pending the outcome of the referendum.
The resolution also highlights that MDP has no issue in respecting and implementing the people's decision following the vote.
However, the government has not made any comments on the matter. Sources state that the government is working to sign the agreement with Eagle Hills within this month.
